HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The family of Sergio Rodriguez was in attendance on Tuesday morning at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new pedestrian bridge near Milby High School in southeast Houston.
Rodriguez was 15 years old when he was hit-and-killed by a train while walking to Milby HS on Dec. 9, 2024.

The bridge, to be called the Sergio Ivan Rodriguez Memorial Pedestrian Bridge, will be located at Harding Street and Galveston Road, near the high school.
The death of Rodriguez led to a community outcry for more precautions to be built for pedestrians who walk around the tracks.
A chain-link fence and sidewalk have since been built, but community members have insisted that a pedestrian bridge would be the ultimate solution.
Officials say they hope the bridge will be completed by the end of 2026.
