Multiple families displaced after fire at west Houston apartments: HFD

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Several residents in Houston's Westchase neighborhood are without a home on Monday after a massive fire broke out at an apartment overnight.

According to the Houston Fire Department, firefighters were called to the apartment complex on Meadowglen Lane at about 11 p.m. Sunday after reports of heavy fire and smoke coming from a third-floor unit. At the scene, ABC13 cameras captured flames and smoke coming from multiple units.

HFD said 12 families were displaced after a dozen units were damaged in the two-alarm fire.

Officials said a safety officer was taken to the hospital, and three firefighters were evaluated on scene. Thankfully, HFD said all families were able to make it out safely.

The fire department added that both the power and the gas were cut off to keep everyone safe.

"There's a lot of damage in there. Fire crews are still working. We do have hotspots they're putting out. Some of the rooms are rekindling, but they're putting that out now," HFD Deputy Chief Bryan Sky-Eagle said. "Slight delays getting on the attack because of the gates. This is a secure facility. Working and getting into the complex, establishing the water supply...those were the only delays we had."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
