
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police are searching for a suspect who fatally shot a man while at the bus stop late Saturday in Independence Heights, officers said
According to the Houston Police Department, the man was sitting at the bus stop near the 7400 block of North Main while on FaceTime with his girlfriend before a man approached him.
HPD said the two were speaking friendly with each other before police said the victim began running and the phone went silent.
The victim's girlfriend told police that she was worried and began to track his phone. Officials said she located his phone and then discovered the victim lying in a grassy area.
Police said he had died from injuries before officers arrived.
The victim's friend who did not want to be identified said he worked at a nearby barber shop and was leaving work at the time.
"Because now I can't even go past the barber shop without thinking about him," she said.
Adding she is still shocked this happened.
"He definitely was my friend, like i could come up there he be like hey 'k'money what's up?' like that's crazy. Y'all really shot my friend he doesn't do anybody to nobody," she said.
This shooting comes following an uptick of crimes reported in METRO's jurisdiction.
According to METRO data posted on its website, there were 378 crimes described as major, including homicide, robbery, and aggravated assault, between October 2023 and September 2024. DPS data showed METRO police investigated 498 of those same offenses from October 2024 and June 2025.

METRO announced that there would be additional patrolling of what they called "hot spots", but didn't disclose which locations.
HPD did not disclose a description of a suspect, but said they are currently searching.
