HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Harris County District Attorney's Office has confirmed it will be exploring investigative avenues regarding the fatal shooting of a 52-year-old Houston man by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on Tuesday.

The DA's Office said in a statement that while it remains under federal control, it will review any additional evidence within its reach.

On Wednesday, the community gathered for a march in response to the shooting. Shortly before, the Harris County DA's office was out canvassing for information regarding the shooting, sources confirmed to ABC13.

This decision follows as a family reels from the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a man who ICE claims was in the country illegally, and was shot and killed on his way to work. The agency claimed that the shooting stemmed from a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation. ICE said the agent fired in self-defense after the agency claimed that the 52-year-old tried to run him over.

Salgado's family met with District Attorney Sean Teare on the matter. A photo was shared on social media by LULAC President Domingo Garcia, a short time following a press conference where community and city leaders condemned the agency for the shooting and expressed that there needs to be a thorough, independent investigation into the shooting.

Mayor John Whitmire also said that the City of Houston is monitoring the situation but will not be involved directly. He also stated that the Houston Police Department is not involved in the matter. Whitmire called it a "tragic, complex issue that's brought to us by our federal officials."

The shooting has garnered national attention from others, as Mexico said it plans to pursue legal action against the United States, saying that it will not stand for the "mistreatment of our fellow Mexicans in the United States.

ABC13 will continue to follow this story and will update with additional details as the investigations continue.
