STAFFORD, Texas (KTRK) -- An investigation is underway in the Stafford area after two people were found dead, and an officer was shot at following a SWAT scene Thursday morning, according to police.
The scene is unfolding in the 13000 block of Lawrence Lane.
The Stafford Police Department said on Wednesday evening, a man arrived at headquarters and reported that his son had allegedly killed someone.
Once officers arrived, a lieutenant said someone from inside immediately opened fire. He says the bullet hit an officer's radio on his chest. Police say the officer is expected to be OK.
"He actually stayed on scene for a while. He did not want to leave. He wanted to stick it through to the end," said Lt. Luciano Lopez with Stafford Police. "He wasn't injured, so I commend him for wanting to see the job through."
Officials said the suspect continued to fire shots for at least an hour before SWAT officials were called to the scene. "The line of fire was toward Stafford Road. There's no homes that way, just an open field," Lopez said.
At one point, officers entered the backyard and found a body wrapped in a blanket underneath plywood, Stafford PD said. A second body was found as well, but police confirm that it was the suspect who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officials said the suspect is 35-year-old Adrian Mercado, who has a lengthy criminal history. Stafford police said the suspect also had a warrant out for his arrest for aggravated robbery.
There is no threat to the public, according to officials.
