WEATHER WATCH: Dense fog expected tonight, severe storms possible Saturday
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- We're putting you on Weather Watch for Saturday as another round of thunderstorms blows through Southeast Texas, and some of them could turn severe.
After our calmer Friday, the weather changes overnight as a warm front blows in clouds and dense fog. Temperatures will start off in the mid 60s and warm into the mid 70s. A round of thunderstorms will start to fire off in the morning generally east of I-45, and these could turn severe as they quickly blow into Louisiana. Any morning storms that rotate could produce brief tornadoes, gusty winds, and large hail. A second round of storms is expected in the afternoon, but tornadoes appear unlikely with that round. Large hail and gusty winds will again be possible. All the rough weather should be gone by the evening when a weak cold front rolls in.
How's the last Sunday of 2024 shaping up?
Sunday looks great! After morning lows near 50, sunshine will push highs into the 70s with a gentle north breeze.
What about New Year's Eve?
A cold front is expected to move through New Year's Eve early in the morning and should pass through dry. While this isn't expected to be a stormy front, it will send temperatures back down into chilly territory for the New Year, with midnight temperatures in the 40s.
When could we get our first freeze in Houston?
We see no signs of freezing temperatures in southeast Texas over the next 10 days. Long-range projections indicate a pattern change is coming to kick off the new year that should lead to chillier weather and a chance for a freeze during the first two weeks of January. On average, Houston's first freeze occurs during the second week of December.
