Gunman arrested after man pressure washing near restaurant killed: HPD

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- After releasing a photo of the man who was wanted in connection with a deadly shooting outside a restaurant in Houston's south side, police say he's now been arrested.

On Thursday, the Houston Police Department said 38-year-old Omar Marzouk was charged with the murder of 32-year-old Jimmy Arevalo.

The victim's brother, Anthony Arevalo, tells ABC13 he's grateful for this first step in closure.

"I know justice will prevail," Anthony said.

HPD says the shooting happened Wednesday at about 12:30 a.m. outside a business on Calumet Street.

Surveillance video shows a driver shooting a man who was pressure washing a restaurant on Calumet and Live Oak in Houston's MacGregor neighborhood.

Surveillance video shows the victim pressure washing equipment outside the restaurant when police say Marzouk drove up and confronted him.

Anthony said he found his brother Jimmy shot dead early Wednesday morning after they were cleaning a business with their company, "Tony's Grease Clean."

"It was a horrible sight to see, very horrible, and just to see my baby brother lying there, I would do anything just to switch places with him," Anthony said.

Police said there was an altercation, and at some point, police say Marzouk opened fire and took off in a gray Toyota Tundra.

But his brother said it was a senseless and unnecessary act of violence that has now left his family heartbroken.

"My kids love him. Love him, with all their heart, and they're right now devastated because they lost a piece of themselves," Anthony said.

He said their goal now is to make sure Jimmy is never forgotten.

"We are all going to miss you, brother," he said.

"We love him a lot. We will never forget about him. You know deep down he's always there for us, for his family," said Ariel Arevalo, the victim's niece.

The owner of OMG Seafood/Daiquiri Land sent the following statement to ABC13:

"We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the tragic incident that occurred outside our establishment after business hours. According to video footage, a third-party contractor from Tony's Grease Clean was on-site conducting routine vent hood cleaning and pressure washing when an unknown individual approached him. After what appeared to be a brief exchange, the individual opened fire.

We want to clarify that the individual who was shot is not an employee of OMG Seafood or any of our affiliates. This was an isolated act of violence and is in no way connected to our operations or business.

At OMG Seafood and Daiquiri Land, we are committed to the safety and well-being of our patrons, staff, and partners. We maintain strong security protocols during business hours to ensure a safe dining experience for everyone. This is a deeply unfortunate situation, and our thoughts are with the victim and his loved ones.

We are cooperating fully with authorities as they continue their investigation."

HPD says Marzouk was taken into custody by Southwest Patrol Division officers Thursday afternoon.
