HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An investigation is underway after utility workers found a woman's decomposing body near the North Freeway at Crosstimbers Road on Monday afternoon, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPD said the workers were performing regular maintenance under the underpass when they discovered the remains on a sidewalk at around 11:35 a.m. Officers said it took the crew some time to realize what they found.
Investigators said the woman's body was decomposing, though it's unclear how long she may have been dead.
In an update, the department said that the woman's body had been burned and showed signs of foul play.
Police said it appears the victim is light-skinned, possibly white or Hispanic, with dark brown or black hair.
The victim's cause of death and identity are pending an autopsy report, HPD said.
