Harris County commissioners discuss review of local ICE policies

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Harris County Commissioners discussed reviewing local ICE policies.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo discussed a proposal to study immigration-related practices across multiple law enforcement agencies.

"We are going to discuss how to get a sense of what the policies are, and whether or not a vote passes, we can request that departments look at that because it is simply an evaluation study, and there really is not a world in which this does not pass," Hidalgo said.

Hidalgo stated that multiple independent law enforcement agencies, including the Houston Police Department, operate in Harris County.

The push for clarity comes as Governor Greg Abbott pushed back on recent actions by the City of Houston regarding ICE while in Harris County.

"The City of Houston signed an agreement to get money from the state of Texas that required Houston to comply with the Department of Homeland Security programs for detaining illegal immigrants. After already getting $110 million from the state under that agreement, Houston is trying to renege on their obligations," Gov. Abbott said.

Hidalgo stated that local officials are following the law.

"Everyone, as far as I know, and certainly us in Harris County and in Houston, we all follow the law," Hidalgo said.
