Community rallies to replace 77-year-old woman's windows after her Third Ward home was broken into
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A 77-year-old Third Ward woman, whose home was left exposed after eight windows were broken, is receiving help from her community, as residents, law enforcement, and local business owners have stepped in to replace them.
Earlier this week, ABC13 reported on Sammye Hughes, who said she could not afford to replace the windows after a man charged with criminal mischief broke through them.

Hughes said she contacted dozens of nonprofits and government agencies but was unable to secure assistance.
"I'm on a fixed income. I barely have enough money to pay my bills and buy medicine," Hughes said.
According to Precinct 7 Constable Smokie Phillips, community members responded quickly upon seeing Hughes' situation on ABC13.
"The community came together, inside the community came together, to ensure she had her windows replaced," Phillips said.
Within days, help arrived from law enforcement, a local homebuilder, and the owner of a glass repair company.
"It wasn't no problem for me to step in, look at the lady's house, see what needed to be replaced, and that's it," Manuel Teal, of Teal Glass Repair, said.
During the effort, Teal received a proclamation recognizing his contribution.
For Hughes, the support came as an unexpected relief.
"To have them come and do it free of charge with no charge to me is just mind-boggling," she said.
The repairs restored more than broken windows, bringing renewed security and support from neighbors determined to help one of their own.
"I am so thankful. I really, really appreciate everybody," Hughes said.
