HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Two people were hospitalized after a fire broke out at a hotel in the Third Ward on Monday morning, officials said.
According to the Houston Fire Department, the fire started on the first floor of a hotel on Truxillo Street and Delano Street.
Fire crews said the person who was inside the room where the fire started is in critical condition with severe burns.
A woman in the room just above that one is stable but has some burns and smoke inhalation, HFD said.
HFD said the fire station was only three minutes from the hotel, and they responded quickly, which prevented significant damage to the building.
Investigators described the hotel as having old-style construction, with rooms that only have one entrance and one exit.
Officials said they're reaching out to the Red Cross to help people staying in the other 20 damaged units.
Arson investigators said they plan to bring K-9s to the scene to pinpoint how the fire started.
