Driver taken into custody after slow-speed chase in Fort Bend County

FORT BEND COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- The intersection near Madden Road at FM 1464 was blocked off on Sunday night as several Fort Bend County sheriff's deputies reportedly surrounded a man who was barricaded inside his vehicle.

The incident began with a traffic violation that started in Harris County, and ended in Fort Bend County when sheriff's deputies there were forced to lay out road spikes to stop the vehicle which was travelling slowly, but wouldn't stop.

Once stopped, police were shouting for the man to get out of the vehicle as traffic stopped for three lanes in each direction. Since the man wouldn't exit the vehicle deputies were forced to break the car's windows and remove him safely.

The man was taken into custody and is being treated according to a law enforcement official. Authorities said the man is known to suffer from mental health problems.

"My understanding is he is an established CIT client which is a mental health patient," said Sgt. John Moore of the Fort Bend Sheriff's Office. "I don't know what any of his diagnosis are. He's being treated right now.

"The vehicle was locked. They broke the window to get into the vehicle and once they were able to get in they got him out without incident," Moore said.

The shutdown of FM1464 caused traffic delays. It's not know if the man will face any charges.
