Ex-officer Drew Peterson gets 40 years in murder-for-hire plot

CHESTER, IL -- Drew Peterson was sentenced Friday to 40 years in prison plus three years of supervision in a murder-for-hire case.

In May, a jury in Randolph County found him guilty of trying to hire a hitman to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow. Glasgow helped convict Peterson in 2012 in the killing of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.

Peterson addressed the court at his sentencing Friday. He spoke for more than 20 minutes, calling the whole thing a "scam".

"Everything you heard on those tapes were staged and fabricated," Peterson told the judge. He said he participated because he was suicidal and hopeful for his appeal.

At the end of his statement, he looked and addressed Glasgow, saying, "Mr. Glasgow, I didn't want you killed."

Glasgow also provided a victim impact statement. He talked about how this affected his own family and added that the criminal justice system is truly the victim.

Peterson is currently serving a 38-year sentence in Savio's death.
