KATY, TX (KTRK) -- Fourteen Katy ISD students were treated by a middle school nurse after a student accidentally set off a can of pepper spray in a classroom.

The district says the incident happened around 11:10am at Seven Lakes Junior High School. Katy ISD police are looking into how the pepper spray, an item prohibited on school campus, ended up in the classroom.

"I ask that you use this incident as a teachable moment with your children to remind them about dangerous materials, like pepper spray. Rather than touching such items, we urge students to report them to an adult immediately," Seven Lakes Junior High School principal Imelda Medrano said in a prepared statement to parents. "The safety of our students is one of our highest priorities. With your help, we will continue our commitment to creating a safe and secure environment that is conducive to learning for your child."

Parents of the students affected have been notified of the incident.
