Barcelona's fire department was called Sunday after a 45-year-old man, had jumped into a lion den. Witnesses said Jose was wearing a military style uniform when he jumped into the den, and had been attacked and dragged by the lions into a tunnel within their enclosure. Rescue services used fire hoses to distance the man from the lions.

Rescue services removed the man about 30 minutes after he jumped into the enclosure, where he was then taken to a hospital where he is in serious but non-threatening condition, AP reports.

The Daily Mirror reports the man has a history of activism, and had previously protested against abortion at La Pedrera, a landmark Barcelona building. The man supposedly was also arrested for burning a flag at a monument to Rafael Casanova in September, the Daily Mirror reports.

One Twitter user at the scene captured images of the lion attack.
