High-speed chase ends with arrests
Suspects in a dollar store robbery are arrested after a chase in northeast Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A police chase in northeast Houston this morning turned into a SWAT standoff at an apartment complex and now three suspects Michael Roy Russell, 46, Derrick White, 17, and Freddrick Johnson, 22, are in custody.

Russell and White are charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Johnson is charged with evading arrest. All are due in court Monday.

It all started around 10am after police say the suspects robbed a Dollar General. Officers chased the suspects, who were in a white van, to an apartment complex on Sterlingshire.

At times, the suspects could be seen crawling through the brush and grass behind buildings.

Two suspects were taken into custody fairly quickly. Police searched door to door at the apartment buildings for the third and eventually a SWAT team was called out. That third suspect eventually came out of one of the units and gave up himself up.

Resident Jesus Disk said, "They were in hot pursuit, chase. It's really sad that things like that happen around here."

A fight broke out in the apartment complex parking lot after the arrest of the final suspect. Reporter Miya Shay, who has been following the story, reported the altercation broke out after nearby family members got upset and a fight began.

Police quickly put an end to the fight, but the suspect's aunt was still angry.

She told Shay, "Yes, I'm mad because they pinpointed my nephew and my nephew didn't do that. That's why I'm mad. You're saying people pointed him out? Yes yes, they're intimidated by him, so they point him out."

Police impounded the van allegedly used in the robbery, and all three suspects were under arrest. But even as they were driven away, the aunt insisted her nephew -- the last person arrested -- had nothing to do with the robbery. She said, "He didn't do that, he'll be home. So everybody -- he'll be home."
