HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A City of Houston park ranger, beaten on the job after interrupting a sexual assault, remains in the hospital.
Conrad D'Sean Wilturner is scheduled for reconstructive surgery Thursday at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Wilturner is an Urban Park Ranger.
According to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, he was checking property at Cullinan Park near Sugar Land early Monday morning when he came across a man sexually assaulting and beating a woman. Authorities say in response, that man, now identified as Migueal Velasquez, 25, grabbed a steel pipe and hit Wilturner in the face and head several times.
Both the woman and Wilturner were rushed to the hospital.
"That's so sad. Not safe nowhere," parkgoer Leticia Avila said.
Wilturner did stop the sexual assault and for that he's being praised.
"We are very proud of Conrad who responded without hesitation or concern for his own safety. We will continue to monitor his recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him," the director of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department said in a statement to Eyewitness News.
Velasquez has been charged with Aggravated Assault of a Public Servant, sexual assault and assault of a family member. He arrested in the 7200 block of Clarewood and now is being held on bonds totaling $750,000.
Velasquez does have a history of violence. In 2011, he spent 80 days in jail for punching his girlfriend's mother while she held their baby.
