SPRING, TX (KTRK) -- A Spring ISD police officer was arrested today on charges of sexual assault of a child, according to the district.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office identified the officer as 37-year-old Damon Michael Jones. Jones has worked for Spring ISD police for about a year and was assigned to DeKaney High School and most recently to Spring High School.

The sheriff's office says it launched an investigation after the victim cried out to family members. The teen told them that she and Jones had a sexual encounter following a series of texting and phone conversations over the summer.

Detectives gathered enough evidence to indict Jones. The officer was placed on administrative leave and assigned to home duty once the district was made aware of the allegations.

At this point, we don't know where the alleged assault took place.

Students who learned about the arrest Wednesday said they expect more from their on-campus officers.

"They should be there to help and protect us," Naomi Pulido said. "And for him to do that, maybe it's not the first time that it has happened."

Amelio Mendez said his son attends Spring High School and his daughter will attend next year.

"That's scary," Mendez said, "And to think that my daughter will go to this high school, you know, that's outrageous."

Jones is being held on a $30,000 bond. His court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
