Source: Investigators to announce Gliniewicz death believed to be suicide
A source familiar with the investigation of Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz's death believes detectives will announce they believe he committed suicide.

FOX LAKE, Ill. -- Two months after the death of Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, investigators are expected to detail their "conclusive results." A source familiar with the investigation believes detectives will announce they believe he committed suicide.

On Sept. 1, Gliniewicz was fatally shot in a remote area of north suburban Fox Lake, after he radioed that he was chasing three male suspects. He described the suspects as two white men and one black man. Police launched a massive manhunt, but the men were never identified.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force has been investigating the 30-year police veteran's death. They said he was shot twice with his own gun - once in his vest and once in the upper chest.

Last month, Commander George Filenko said the case was drawing to a close.

"We are hoping to come to at least some conclusions in the next several weeks, but the investigation is still moving forward," Cmdr. Filenko told the ABC7 I-Team. "I think what we are looking at here is at least a finding by the coroner's office. I've been in contact with Dr. Rudd, our coroner, continuously, sometimes several times a week discussing the case. We have been working in unison and he has been extremely cooperative."

Marciano Martinez, who lives across the street from the area where Gliniewicz died, said he is ready for the mystery to be solved.

"I think about every single day. I mean what exactly happened in that field? It's a mystery that needs to be answered," Martinez said.

Gliniewicz was a beloved mentor to many, the leader of an explorer program and nicknamed "G.I. Joe."

Task force leaders are scheduled to announce the results of their investigation at a news conference at the Round Lake Beach Civic Center Wednesday morning.
