Courthouse incident linked to Greenwood murder investigation
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Police linked the incident that happened at the courthouse downtown this morning to the murder investigation of Asst. Chief Deputy Clint Greenwood.
Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constables received a call about a suspicious person at the courthouse on Fannin, between Congress Avenue and Preston Street.
Witnesses calling into the ABC13 newsroom said the building was completely surrounded by officers earlier this morning.
The Constable's office said deputies searched the building, but no suspicious person was found, giving the all clear.
In a press conference shortly after, Baytown police said that the courthouse incident involved murder suspect William Francis Kenny.
Baytown police said investigators developed information identifying Kenny as Greenwood's killer. Police said they also received information that Kenny might be in downtown Houston. That prompted them to send officers to the 1910 Courthouse.
After further investigation, officers learned that Kenny killed himself the day after he allegedly shot Greenwood. Police said he shot himself with the same gun that he used to kill Greenwood.
It has now been one week since Greenwood was shot and killed outside the Baytown courthouse.
Investigators had been searching for clues, releasing surveillance video of a man suspected in his death, along with a vehicle description late last week. Police said it was that surveillance video of Kenny and the vehicle that helped them put the pieces together in the murder investigation.
ABC13 Investigates reporter Ted Oberg took a closer look at Kenny and found that he had been writing about Greenwood for years and had a grudge against several law enforcement authorities across Harris County.
