House fire claims man's life in Porter

PORTER, TX (KTRK) -- One person is dead and several others injured after a fire burned a home to the ground in Porter, TX.

It happened around 1:45am this morning at a home on Ravenwood Drive in southeast Montgomery County.

Five family members and a family friend were inside the home when flames broke out near the front door. Two people escaped out the back door of the home, and three others jumped from second floor windows to safety.

The 57-year-old father of the family was still trapped inside on the second floor when firefighters arrived.

"We told him to jump, jump out the window. He said I can't."

Shauna Bashlor tearfully describes how she tried to get her boyfriend's father to jump from the second floor of the family's home in Porter.

Firefighters attempted to reach the man, but the second story then collapsed.

Firefighters then worked to get the flames under control. The man's body was then recovered.

"He was like a second dad to me," Bashlor said. "I just don't know what to do right now."

Shauna says she and five members of her boyfriend's family were sleeping, mom, dad, and three brothers ages 30, 20, and 15 years old. She heard the mother screaming and they had only seconds to escape -- mom and the youngest son from the back door, with Shauna and two brothers jumping from the second floor window. Shauna's boyfriend remains at the hospital, badly injured.

The Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office is still working to determine the cause of the blaze. Fire officials say it appears there were no working smoke detectors in the home.
