Local woman harnesses social media to identify man found wandering

KATY, TX (KTRK) -- Some say the world just isn't what it once was. In fact, if we believe some of the news you hear, you might think there's no kindness, no trust left -- but here's an unlikely duo that might prove you wrong.

Kelly Mayes-Holmes was just getting home after dropping off her kids from school when she a the man in her driveway who didn't speak English or seem to know where he was.

"He was thirsty," explained Kelly Mayes-Holmes. "You could tell he had walked a distance because his feet were really swollen,"

"If anybody has a grandparent in your lives," she said, "that's the last thing you want, your grandparent being lost."

Kelly immediately called 911, then posted a video on Facebook, where more than 18,000 people watched, many offering help.

Then, for three hours, the two spent time together. They drove around the neighborhood, looking for his family, drank tea and listened to music. She even gave him her keys to help keep him calm.

Finally, she got a call from the sheriff's office -- the man's son had called, frantic and scared, so Kelly took him home.

"He just said, 'Thank you, thank you, thank you,'" she recalls. "He took my arms and my face and said, 'Thank you very much for returning my dad."

Turns out, the man had just moved to the neighborhood, and may have been trying to find his previous home.

Kelly still doesn't know his name, but will never forget her new friend.
