HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Did you know you can actually make a lot of food items you normally buy at the grocery store at home...and for a lot less money.

One thing is granola. It can cost up to $6 a bag at the store. You can make your own baking oats, sugar, honey and butter.

Hummus is another food you can make at home. If you buy it at the store, it can by about $4. But if you get the ingredients -- chickpeas and garlic -- and throw them in a food processor, you can make your own.

You can also make your own pesto. If you have basil that's about to spoil, all you need to do is chop it up, combine in with garlic and olive oil in a food processor.

Other items that you can make include bake-your-own bread, make-your-own fruit smoothies or pasta sauce. You can even create your own salad dressing.

All of these will help you save cash by buying the ingredients and making them yourself over paying for the ready-made items.
