Brazoria, Fort Bend counties to begin debris pickup from roadways

Waiting for city or county workers to remove the debris from your front yard can get frustrating. For those who have the means, there are other ways to get rid of your curb side debris.

Aztec Rentals still have dumpsters available, but it will take about a week to get one.

Depending on size, it will cost anywhere from $5 to $700 to get a dumpster dropped off and picked up once you fill it. Other clean up essentials like porta potties, dehumidifiers, and fans are also available for rent. Mayor Sylvester Turner says most Houstonians will depend on the city to pick up the debris, and he's hoping for a timeline shorter than 4 to 6 months.

"From my vantage point, I do not want this debris to be on the ground for 4-6 months that is unacceptable to me. That is why they are working seven days a week, 12 hours a day. It is it is unacceptable to me for the debris to be there that long," said Mayor Turner.

Mayor Turner says the city is working on attracting more contractors to come to town to pick up debris, but admits it can get competitive with the work in Florida for Irma.

Brazoria County will soon begin picking up bagged storm debris from state and county roads.

Residents must separate debris into six different categories: household trash, vegetative debris, construction and demolition debris, appliances, electronics and household hazardous waste:

Debris must not be stacked or leaned against trees, poles or other structures and should be placed in the right of way as close to the road as possible.

Over the coming weeks, there will be multiple passes down each road to retrieve debris.

County crews will only pick up debris from state- and county-managed roads; those living within city limits should contact local officials.

Meanwhile, authorities in Fort Bend County have received permission from FEMA and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to pick up bagged debris. Fort Bend County residents should follow the same sorting instructions provided by Brazoria County officials.

Storm debris must not be placed in household trash bins.
