Big security change for this year's Galveston Mardi Gras celebration

GALVESTON (KTRK) -- More than 300,000 people are getting ready to party at this year's Mardi Gras celebration.

But don't be surprised to see something in the crowd that's never been allowed before: guns, out in the open.

"It was concealed carry before. Now it's concealed or open," explained Michael Gray, with the Galveston Police Department.

Organizers consulted legal experts and the attorney general, who said the city must follow state laws regarding open carry because the celebration is held on public streets. Still, with so much alcohol and revelry, the city is taking precautions.

"You have to be licensed. There will be officers at the gates who will ensure that everybody is abiding by the state law," Gray said.
