Man charged in Baytown woman's brutal stabbing on Mother's Day in 2016
BAYTOWN, Texas (KTRK) -- A murder suspect wanted for stabbing a woman to death is now in custody more than a year and half after the killing.
On Mother's Day of 2016, Nataliya Shal, 50, was found stabbed facedown in her Baytown apartment. Court records show the suspect is accused of trying to sexually assault Shal before the stabbing.
Police said her husband, David Englerth who is a truck driver and was out of town, called them asking that they check on her. He wasn't able to reach her by phone.
"People talk about soulmates. We were. No doubt," Englerth said in a press conference last year.
Officers reportedly saw her body through a window when they arrived.
Since then, the search continued for the killer. Police released this sketch of a suspect, but had no luck finding him for months.
Now, police have a suspect in custody. 29-year-old Byron Lloyd Collins is charged with capital murder, according to court documents.
Investigators said he looks similar to the sketch released last year, and they do not believe Collins knew Shal before the killing.
Authorities are expected to release more details about their investigation Wednesday morning in order to bring some long-awaited answers to Shal's family and neighbors.
