HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston Police officer is in the hospital this morning after being hit by driver on the Katy Freeway.

It happened while police were investigating an earlier crash.

The officer is said to have back and neck injuries after he was hit while trying to protect fellow officers looking into a fatal motorcycle crash.

It all started around 11pm when a female motorcycle driver who was exiting the Katy Freeway westbound onto 610 southbound lost control of her bike and went flying over the overpass guardrail onto the road below.

While police were looking into the crash, they shut down several lanes of I-10 westbound. That is when police say a woman in a black four-door car slammed into an police department SUV with the officer inside the vehicle.

"The officer was transported to the hospital as a precaution he was complaining of back pain, he was expected to be okay," says HPD Sgt. Larry Crowson. "Initial indications are the female driving the vehicle that hit the police vehicle was intoxicated and we are following up on that now."

The driver of the motorcycle died at the scene.
