LOS GATOS, CA -- A California company is developing technology that "Back to the Future" fans may recognize, and it could one day make buildings safer during earthquakes.

The company, Arx Pax, launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $250,000 to develop a hoverboard.

The Hendo Hover creates a magnetic field that pushes and holds the board 1 inch above the ground.

Its developers believe the technology will eventually be used in magnetic field architecture. When a building shakes in an earthquake, large versions of the hoverboard will turn on and help stabilize the building.

However, there are kinks to work out. Making a single board costs $10,000, it's loud and the battery only lasts about seven minutes.
