Woman arrested, victim ID'd in deadly SW Houston shooting
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police say the family of a 34-year-old woman turned her in after they recognized her in a video showing the aftermath of a fatal shooting in southwest Houston.
Veronica Erin Staley, 34, is charged with murder charge in connection with the shooting death of her ex-boyfriend, 30-year-old Aljosa Memovic. Police say an eyewitness' video showed Staley running toward a car, then speeding off from a parking lot in the 6300 block of Fairdale moments after gunshots rang out.
Rolando Ixcol and his brother were there. They say they saw the woman screaming at a man, chasing him around their work van, then shooting him and pistol whipping him.
"I was scared, that's it. Yes I jumped in the van with my brother and that's it," Ixcol said.
They both ran out of the way as the crime happened before their eyes.
Houston police say Staley has now admitted to killing Memovic. Investigators say the two had arranged to meet in this southwest side parking lot when things turned violent.
Memovic died at the hospital. Once police released video of the female suspect, police say her own family turned her in. They cooperated with police as officers picked her up from a northwest side home.
"That's commendable, to be able to turn in a loved on. That's got to be challenging and I can't imagine the pain both families are going through," Memovic's neighbor, Aline Houston said.
Neighbors in the Jersey Village area, where the victim's family has lived until recent flooding, say they recall meeting Memovic with a girlfriend near his home. They never imagined an outcome like this.
"Absolutely awful. Nobody deserves for somebody to come up no matter what's going on. Call the cops, you shouldn't just shoot someone. You don't shoot people or beat them up," neighbor Joann Smith said.
