Victim's girlfriend delivers more testimony in doctor poisoning trial

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Dr. Evette Toney, the woman whose longtime boyfriend was allegedly poisoned by his mistress, testified today about pleading with him to seek medical care.

Prosecutors claim Dr. George Blumeschein nearly died after Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo allegedly slipped a component of antifreeze into his coffee.

Dr. Blumenschein and Dr. Gonzalez worked together as cancer doctors at MD Anderson when their relationship turned sexual.

Dr. Gonzalez is now on trial, facing a maximum sentence of life in prison if found guilty.

Today, Dr.Toney testified she got a call from Dr. Blumenschein on the afternoon on January 27, 2013, and noticed his speech was slurred.

"He said, "Evette, I'm not feeling well.'"

Dr. Toney said she begged him to go to the hospital multiple times that day, but Dr. Blumenschein refused.

"I didn't know what to think. He's having dinner with three doctors. Cleary, somebody is going to take him to the hospital," Dr. Toney testified.

Dr. Toney said Dr. Blumenschein later promised to to go the hospital, but actually went to Dr. Gonzalez's home.

Later that night, Dr. Blumenschein finally went to the hospital. Dr. Toney met him there, and testified today, she'll never forget what she saw.

"I thought he was dying," she said. "I actually thought he was dying in front of me."

Dr. Toney said her boyfriend was unable to walk. She testified that Dr. Gonzalez later told her doctors had found Ethylene Glycol in his system.

"It was heartbreaking to watch someone suffer," Dr. Toney said. "It was heartbreaking. You're sitting there waiting for bad news."
