HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A group of local high school students are heading to New Mexico this week to see a rocket they built launch into space.

The students are part of Booker T. Washington's magnet program which focuses on engineering careers. After consulting with the likes of NASA, the teens designed and built a rocket called The Golden Eagle Four. Their goal is to have it reach a height of 100,000 feet.

Students say the project was a group effort.

Student Osmar Barrera said, "We had a lot of teammates that helped us put this together so it wasn't just me and the project manager it was everybody put together -- putting their design, putting their calculations, and all the work and effort to get the rocket done."

The rocket is set to launch from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico on Tuesday.
