Mayor Turner addresses concerns about Zika in Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke today about the city of Houston staying proactive in the fight against the Zika virus.

"We want all of our residents to have the information and the products that they need to protect themselves from this virus," said Mayor Turner.

The mayor accepted a donation from Scott's-Ortho Bug B Gone.

"Residents need to do there part too. Follow the three D's of mosquito defense: drain, dress and deet," said Mayor Turner.

Zika virus may spark world health crisis, scientists say

Approximately one in five people infected with the Zika virus show symptoms. Common symptoms of the Zika virus include fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis, according to the CDC.

Two cases of Zika virus are now reported in the Houston area.

Severe complications from the virus that require hospitalization are rare, according to the CDC.

Doctors at Texas Children's Hospital are encouraging expectant mothers who think they may have symptoms of the virus to come in for an examination. Experts say the best line of defense right now is to protect yourself from mosquito bites. For pregnant women, there are a few sprays on the market that do not contain DEET, including Buzz Away Extreme, SkeeterScreen and BugBand.
