H-E-B will require Harris County customers to cover their face while shopping

H-E-B is among the grocery stores requiring customers to cover their face when they visit.

Harris County's mandatory mask order is now in effect. Under the order, residents over the age of 10 will be required to wear face coverings when out in public.

Coverings can be a mask, scarf, bandanna or handkerchief. The order will last for 30 days.

"Our partners as well as customers must wear a proper face covering to enter our stores in cities where the law requires people to wear masks while in public," H-E-B officials said in a statement on April 3.

HPD Chief Art Acevedo pointed out in a tweet that though police officers will be primarily seeking voluntary compliance, "@HEB, @kroger, and all private businesses retain the right to refuse entry to those who refuse to wear a mask. Please know you could be given a criminal trespass pursuant to Texas Statute."

Here's where you can get a mask at no cost:

• Tuesday, April 28: New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church - 9126 Jensen Drive

• Thursday, April 30: Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church - 7104 Homestead Road

• Saturday, May 2: Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church - 908 E. 32 1/2 Street

The Vietnamese-American community in Houston is also working together to distribute masks on the following days:

• Thursday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Vietnam War Memorial, 11360 Bellaire Blvd.

The order is something that came with criticism. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick called this an abuse of the use of executive orders and the ultimate government overreach.

Meanwhile, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo is standing her ground and believes face coverings will help lessen the spread of the virus. Those who violate the order will face a $1,000 fine.

Mayor Sylvester Turner has said people without masks in Houston will not receive citations.
