Louisiana's newest luxury casino nears opening day
It's a safe bet many customers planning trips to the Golden Nugget are from the Houston area

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KTRK) -- Louisiana's newest luxury casino and resort is about to officially open its doors this month. And it's a safe bet that many of the customers planning trips to the Golden Nugget are coming from Houston.

With each turn of the shovel, the Golden Nugget Casino is one step closer to its long-awaited grand opening. The tower, with its famous name on display, can be seen all the way from the bridge into Lake Charles. Below it is a chopper owned by the man who owns all of this, Houstonian Tillman Fertitta.

"It better be real full," Fertitta said. "With a $600 million investment, you better have a lot of people out there."

Eyewitness News spoke to Feritta 12 months ago when he gave us a tour of the construction site. Fast forward to today, when 750 rooms these are ready to welcome guests beginning next week.

Less than a mile away, a temporary office is also full of activity with people coming and going in anticipation for the big day.

Lupe Torres from Wharton has his player's card ready to go. Now he's hoping luck will follow.
