LA PORTE, TX -- Mickey Gilley and a Friendswood developer are currently working with La Porte city officials to open a new Gilley's live music venue and dance hall to serve as the centerpiece for a proposed $55 million mixed-use development.

The original Gilley's nightclub in Pasadena became famous as the backdrop for the movie "Urban Cowboy" but was destroyed by a fire 25 years ago.

Unlike the rowdy honky-tonk that drew thousands of tourists to Pasadena, Gilley said the La Porte location is designed to be a family-friendly music and entertainment complex.

"We can make this something we can all be proud of," he said.
