Police say a woman may have saved her life after playing dead when she was shot in the head by her husband in northwest Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police say a woman may have saved her life after playing dead when she was shot in the head by her husband in northwest Houston.

It all unfolded in the 10000 block of Fullerton Drive just outside the Beltway.

Police say the husband and wife got into an argument over his drinking. They say the husband shot the wife in her head. That's when the stepson came into the bedroom and tried to call police for help and he, too, was shot in the head.

Police initially thought the wife fatally shot her husband, but then they determined he turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.

Both the wife and step-son are expected to be OK. Police say they were talking coherently to investigators before going to the hospital.

The wife told police she played dead after getting shot.

Neighbors say they often heard arguing coming from the home.

"Actually the gentlemen is kind of a large gentleman, and he's always been a very loud-voiced gentleman and you could hear him yelling, calling for his dogs all the time," neighbor Barbara Estrada said.

"We always heard noises like screaming. They probably had problems but he was a good person," neighbor Leticia Mendez said.

The family's dogs were given to other relatives. We've seen relatives come by, distraught and desperate for more information as this investigation continues.
