Klein students honor teenager fighting Leukemia at football game

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- In a football game Saturday that pitted rivals against each other, both Klein and Spring high schools joined to dedicate the contest to a 14-year-old 9th grader who's waging a battle of his own.

Jacob Munoz was diagnosed 10 months ago with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. He has been in treatment ever since.

Less than a week ago, he was in ICU, fighting a side effect of the chemotherapy he has been taking. On Saturday, he came out in the sunlight, not on his way to a doctor's office, but a football game, with a sea of T-shirts that had a printed message on them -- "Jacob Strong."

"It's overwhelming, the way this community has supported us," said his tearful mother, Yvette Munoz.

Jacob was a middle school athlete, who played football and basketball. He says when he grows up, he wants to be a professional athlete.

Klein HS cheerleaders organized blood drives to help Jacob.

"It's to help save his life," said Erica, a 16-year-old member of the cheerleading squad. "It's all about faith."

The band sold T-shirts to help with Jacob's medical expenses. The shirts could be seen in the stands, and cheerleaders from both schools wore them for the game.

Jacob has thousands of followers on Facebook, and just as many in this northwest Harris County community.
