HOUSTON (KTRK) -- If you're a Starbucks coffee drinker, you might have noticed your cup of joe costs up to 20 cents more this week.
As you know, iced coffee is a big seller this time of year at coffee shops, but you can save big by making your own.
Iced coffee actually costs more because of the cold-brewing process. It means more beans in every cup, which hikes up the price. But there's no need to splurge on your iced coffee when you can DIY at home.
Black Smith in Montrose is known for its rich coffee flavors and unique coffee beverages on their menu. While it's nice to enjoy a treat, coffee expert David Buehrer says it's easy and cheaper to make your own.
First up, the easy method. You will need a quart container, coarsely ground coffee, water, and a filter.
"What we are going to do is weigh out 90 grams," Buehrer said.
Then add a quart of water to your container and store that overnight in your fridge. The next morning when you are ready to drink, filter the grounds with a cheese cloth and pour over ice to enjoy.
If you have a little more time, there's another version of iced coff that you will need your coffee maker for.
"The idea is to fully extract coffee, fully brew coffee, to get the most potential from each bear as you can you have to use the energy from hot water," Buehrer said.
To maximize the flavor out of coffee, he uses hot water and then flash cools it onto ice.
"We are going to start with 300 grams of ice. Then I am going to put that in my carafe here," Buehrer said.
Remember, it takes more coffee to make iced coffee for a bolder taste.
"Then I am going to do 750 ml of water. That's it, let your coffee maker do the rest for you," Buehrer said.
Then pour your freshly brewed coffee over ice.
For the culinary experts out there, there is a treat called an iced coffee lassie.
"We start with a lot more coffee, 375 grams coarsely ground, instead of brewing it into water, we brew it into milk," Buehrer said. "After we soak it into a gallon of milk, we take it up to 185 degrees and leave it there for 15 minutes then we cool it down to 120 degrees and add 50 grams of yogurt."
The ingredients are stirred together and left in the mixture overnight, then served cold the next day.
