Waters receding along San Jacinto River

KINGWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- All the rain we had this week did some damage along the San Jacinto River, but conditions are now starting to improve.

We found water dangerously close to homes as we traveled through the neighborhood. The good news: no homes are flooded yet, which is making residents very relieved.

"You can see the trees, under water, that are usually on dry land," says Matthew Johnson. "You can see my boat dock, about 5 to 6 feet more water than normal. It's usually not under water."

Matthew Johnson has lived on the San Jacinto River for years. We could sense his relief as the recent rains paused to give the river, and him, a break. He felt confident answering the big question: How much more water would it take to get all the way to his house?

"It would take a lot more, probably as much as the flood of 94," said Johnson. "You can see how we're on an incline so we're not concerned at all."

Johnson is like many others we talked to this morning as we went house to house. Many thought they'd see the river rise overnight, but woke to a pleasant surprise. The water is now receding, at least for most of them.

"Probably about 48 hours ago, we were really concerned, when it was rising really quickly and every morning we were waking up and it was about 8 feet further up than it was the night before, but we're not concerned anymore" Johnson said.
