Man sentenced for hauling 34 bundles of pot, ramming car into officer's vehicle

A man who rammed the car of a Border Patrol officer trying to stop him from evading custody in South Texas has been handed down a hefty sentence for the incident and for drug possession.

Issac Medina, of Rio Grande City, was sentenced to 135 months of imprisonment for use of a deadly weapon, use of violence against the agent and acting in a manner creating substantial risk of serious bodily injury. The 29-year-old had pleaded guilty to the charges June 26.

Medina was arrested March 14 after Borter Patrol agents caught him driving a suspicious vehicle down to the Rio Grande River, but it wasn't easy. Police say he first sped off, and when an agent pulled into roadway to block him, Medina rammed his car head-on into the agent's vehicle. He finally surrendered when that agent opened fire.

Later, agents determined that Medina was hauling 34 large bundles of marijuana in his vehicle.

Medina will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
