HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Those who have a double chin know it can be a tough thing to get rid of, even with diet and exercise. Until now.
There is a new FDA-approvedway to get a more defined jawline and it is now available in Houston.
Lourdes Pike is one of the first people in Houston to try an in-office fat dissolving injection called Kybella.
"I have tried gadgets in the past, you know those exercise things, I've tried so many things and I'm like 'Stink, it won't go away!'" Pike said. "Even when I was younger and very athletic all the time, I would look at my profile and go 'Oh, never can get rid of that.'"
But now she is visiting Suzanne Bruce and Associates Dermatologist office to try the new procedure. Dr. Tracy Katz explains Kybella as a synthetic form of an acid that is already in the human body.
"The way that it works is that the deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells by destroying the membrane of the cell, and we know fat cells don't grow back," said Katz.
She says the side effects are mild swelling, redness, and bruising.
"It's really quick and simple, the whole procedure itself takes about 15 to 30 minutes total," Katz said.
The real discomfort may be the price.
"The cost for Kybella per treatment depends on the treatment area size. A ballpark cost is starting at $1,500 per treatment, Katz said.
Patients should expect to need two to six treatments for results.
Since it is so new, only a handful of doctors are trained to administer Kybella in Houston.
