Trump taps Lt. General Flynn for National Security Adviser

NEW YORK, NY (KTRK) -- Donald Trump has chosen retired Lt. General Michael Flynn as National Security Adviser, senior officials tell ABC News.

Michael Thomas Flynn is a registered Democrat in North Carolina, where he has lived for a time and served in the Obama administration.

He served as Director of Intelligence for the Joint Special Operations command, with stints in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also was a platoon leader for Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983.

He resigned a year earlier than he was supposed to to head up the Defense Intelligence Agency.

During the election, he made news by saying Hillary Clinton should step down from running because of questions related to her email server.

Flynn is chairman and CEO of the Flynn Intel Group in Alexandria, Virginia, and served as an informal adviser on several 2016 political campaigns, including Trump's campaign for president.

His book, "The Field of Flight: How We Can Win the Global War Against Radical Islam and Its Allies" comes out on July 12.
