ALVIN, TX (KTRK) -- A man who got into a shootout with a Brazoria County sheriff's deputy is now recovering in the hospital after shooting himself in the head.
Investigators say around 9:00pm last night, Deputy Dustin Burke attempted to stop a black SUV in the area of the 1400 Block of CR 145 in Alvin.
The drier of the SUV refused to pull over and began firing shots at the perusing deputy. The driver then pulled over near Paul and Texas streets in Alvin and continued to fire at the deputy.
Deputy Burke then returned fire at the suspect. At one point during the shootout, Deputy Burke suffered a minor injury to his face. Investigators believe the injury was caused by shrapnel as his patrol car was struck by one of the bullets fired at him.
During the shoot out, the suspect's brother, who lives in the immediate area, ran outside and wrestled the gun away from the suspect. Deputies say the suspect then ran into his home and refused to come out.
A SWAT team was called to the scene and made entry into the home. They then discovered the suspect had a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Clear Lake Regional Hospital where he remains in serious condition.
The suspect now faces charges of aggravated assault on a public servant.
