HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A warning tonight for Comcast subscribers. A scam is making the rounds and it has already cost one customer of the cable provider hundreds of dollars.
If you get a call from someone claiming they can lower your cable bill, and offer you a deal that sounds too good to be true, chances are it could be a scam and you should hang up immediately.
When Dalia Cabrera's phone rang earlier this month, the person on the other end claiming to be with Comcast had an offer she couldn't refuse.
"The 3-hundred dollars was going to cover from 6 months. After the 6 months was over, it would be $49.99," said Cabrera.
What made the offer sound legit: the person on the other end of the phone had Cabrera's personal information.
"Once they gave me my social, I was like, you know, Comcast has all this information," said Cabrera.
Cabrera says the caller told her to go to a local store and purchase a Green Dot money card, load it with $300, then call them back to provide them with the prepaid card information.
"When I called that number back, they answered as Comcast billing," said Cabrera.
Cabrera says she gave them the Green Dot card information, and thought she was locked into the deal. However, she received a bill from Comcast weeks displaying her regular monthly rate.
"So I called Comcast, and they said they had no record and anybody calling them, or them calling me," said Cabrera.
As it turns out, Cabrera became a victim of the growing Green Dot money scam. Something Monica Russo with the Houston BBB says can be virtually untraceable.
"Well that's a major red flag. Anytime someone asks you to pay for something with a Green Dot money card, you really need to have your antenna's up and be aware this can possibly be a scam'" said Russo.
