Meet Zander!

So many wonderful animals come into the City of Houston pound or BARC every day. It's heartbreaking. This sweet, young fella has really captured the heart of the medical staff and volunteers at BARC.

From all accounts, Zander is a loving, but very sick dog in need of expert medical care to find out what's making him feels so ill.

So he can get the help he needs, Zander was rescued by some kind volunteers from Friends of BARC and taken to a local veterinary office.

The veterinarians at VCA Southwest Freeway have been caring for him and discovered he is suffering from anemia. The anemia is likely caused by an organism called Babesia, which is common in pit bulls. In addition to antibiotics, Zander also got a blood transfusion from another dog!

Veterinary technician, Sandra, and her dog, Strychnine, volunteered to donate blood to Zander to help get him out of danger.

Since starting on antibiotics and getting his blood transfusion, Zander has gained 6 pounds and his red blood cell levels are almost in the normal range.

Zander still has a long road to recovery and will eventually need a foster and a fur-ever home.

If you'd like to donate toward his recovery, you can call VCA Southwest Freeway at 281-491-8387 and make a donation under the rescue account set up for Zander.

Their address is:
