A sweet golden retriever named Maverick has been battling lymphoma for a year, losing the use of his hind legs, but still fighting through multiple rounds of chemotherapy. When his condition took a turn for the worse and his lymphoma returned, his owner, Joey Maxwell, decided to take a special trip through town.
Maxwell wrote the touching story on the Lowe's Home Improvement Facebook page. After he and his wife, Allison, picked up Maverick from chemotherapy one morning, he had the idea for a wagon ride around town. But their town of Deland, Florida has recently been hit with Hurricane Matthew, and he couldn't find a wagon anywhere.
With the help of the store manager at a local Lowe's, they not only found a wagon for Maverick, but offered a discount. "The store was kind enough to extend us a discount on the wagon as well, which at the time was more than I could handle, and the cashier and I both had a nice little cry over it," he wrote in the Facebook post.
And thanks to them, Maverick had the best day ever.
Maxwell wrote that on their outing through Deland, Maverick and his trusty stuffed giraffe made new friends at every corner. They even got hamburgers, dog-friendly ice cream, and special dog treats. Who could resist making friends with such a sweet puppy?
The look on Maverick's face says it all. Maxwell said he's been feeling so much love from everyone in their Deland community.
The most touching photos were taken in front of a local artist's installment that look like angel's wings over sweet Maverick. He was even lucky enough to meet the artist behind the wings just by chance during his trip through town. "This picture will forever hold a special place in our hearts," Maxwell wrote on the official Everybody Loves Maverick Facebook page.
Maverick's owners have set up a GoFundMe page to help with all of his continued medical expenses.
I know we all have our fingers crossed that Maverick can battle through chemotherapy and keep making the Deland community, and us, smile for a long time to come.
