Proposal would turn Astrodome into world's largest indoor park
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Harris County Judge Ed Emmett announced a proposal to convert the Astrodome into the world's largest indoor park and recreation center.
"I believe it is time to put forth a new vision for the future of the Dome," Emmett said. "With that in mind, I am suggesting that we explore the concert of creating an indoor park and recreation area inside the Dome for the people of Harris County -- the world's largest indoor park."
Judge Emmett proposed turning the Astrodome into an indoor park, but gave very few details on what would go inside or who would pay for it.
"I see hiking trails and all sorts of activities on the upper levels. Maybe an exhibit ring where traveling exhibits from museums can come in," he said. "How much do I estimate this would cost? Well, it depends on what goes in it. Like any park, there are some public funds. You also form conservancies and friends of the park that contribute and raise money. You might have private interests."
The judge would not give a time frame for a finalized proposal.
There have been critics. The Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo both want to tear the Astrodome down and use the space for parking. Others have tried to designate it an historic site.

There have been hundreds of proposals presented already discussing what to do with the stadium. Judge Emmett hopes his proposal will be the one that has the answer.
For the plan to move forward, county commissioners will have to vote on it. If they decide to use public funding, taxpayers will have the ultimate say.
