Glenn Casey Portwood appeared Thursday before a judge, who determined the 52-year-old man was a flight risk and too much of a danger to the community and to be released from custody. Portwood was arrested two days earlier on two counts of receipt of child pornography, one count of attempted distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.
Authorities began investigating Portwood in September 2012, when an officer investigating peer-to-peer file sharing programs on the Internet traced child pornography downloads to his computer.
Officers executed a search warrant at his home, and inside the trunk of a car parked in his driveway, they confiscated a black backpack filled with CDs, an external hard drive and two laptop computers. When officers looked on the devices, they discovered at least 50,325 images and 1,370 videos depicting child erotica and porn.
Portwood is being held until his trial, which was been scheduled to begin May 19. If convicted, he faces between 5 and 30 years imprisonment and up to a possible $250,000 fine.
