Former Houston Oiler says he was victim of car break-in caught on camera

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The joy of returning home to the city that you love is something many people look forward to.

Former Houston Oilers running back Alonzo Highsmith said he was feeling that joy recently upon returning to Houston. Highsmith said that joy turned to sorrow when he discovered that his rental car was broken into while he was visiting a restaurant.

"The thing that bothered me the most is that they took everything. My luggage with all of my clothes in it. My backpack, which had all of my work, my iPad, had my computer. It had some extra credit cards I keep for emergencies and just the necessities you need to travel with all of the time," Highsmith said.

Highsmith viewed surveillance video from a nearby restaurant and described what he saw in the video.

"Yeah, it was all on surveillance. You see the guy going up to the car with a flashlight, looking in the car, then he signals to another guy," Highsmith said. "Then you hear on the surveillance video the breaking of the window. Like you couldn't take this off the seat. This guy climbed all the way into the car, climbed all the way into the car. You could see his feet wiggling, and I got my bags and left."

Both Highsmith and the business owner told ABC13 they have been in contact with Houston police and they're investigating the incident.

Highsmith said he purchased clothes and other items that were taken on Thursday, but not what's most important.

"I would just say you can keep the backpack and keep the chain. I just want my wife's little rings back," Highsmith said.
