The area was supposed to be closed yesterday, but because of all the rain on Friday and Saturday, the San Felipe Street Bridge closed after the rush hour.
The area will remain closed for traffic for about the next two weeks while construction crews demolish the bridge and rebuild it.
To give you a better idea of where the closure will be, it's at the railroad tracks just east of Mid Lane inside 610 West Loop.
At the River Oaks cleaners off San Felipe and Mid Lane, Christy Custodio says she expects business to be slow over the next two weeks. It's something she's not looking forward to.
"It is going to affect us cause new people, new customers there just going to prefer to go somewhere else," Custodio said.
During the estimated two weeks, the San Felipe Bridge will be closed to all traffic while construction crews work to rebuild not only the drainage area but the 50 year old San Felipe Bridge.
"What it is, there is an open ditch here now and we are replacing that with a closed storm sewer," said construction worker Daniel Lee.
Drivers who take this route to work or live in this area are encouraged to take a different route and avoid the area all together. While some say it's inconvenient, it's only temporary.
"The proposed plan by the City of Houston and the engineers is to use Mid Lane or go around to Westheimer or if you're going further down use a street a little bit further away," said Lee.
Some other possible alternate routes include 610 West Loop, Memorial Drive, Richmond Avenue or Kirby.
